Information and communication technologies in command and control are a rapidly growing area of interest. Optimism about the effects of information networking and aggregation is high. Research on the effects how people use new technology in dynamic situations is however, developing at a much more modest pace. It is difficult to investigate how people handle dynamics and it is equally difficult to investigate effects of new technology in complex dynamic situations.

Experiments in crisis management are expensive and difficult to realize. In addition there is a lack of training facilities in real crisis environments. Serious games and simulation can provide an alternative.

Emotions and affect play an important role in crisis situations, especially negative emotions such as fear and anger, but also pain and stress. The automated assessment of emotions in a context sensitive way is needed for optimal situation awareness.
